I have a few things to say about this video. Let me start off by saying it may be that some readers of Huliganov.TV around the world cannot see the video as it has a copyright claim! This is truly outrageous seeing that we, the early YT community were invited and encourages to make an upload videos for a competition to showcase this very song and they HAD to include the song, which was made available for that very use. Nothing was said about needing to remove the videos afterwards. If anything illustrates the goalposts shift between the Old YouTube and the new Google “Do no evil? Do no making me laugh, more like!” mentality, then this is it.

The term “numa” refers to the popular name of the record “Dragostea din tei” or Love from the Lindens in English by the Romanian group O-Zone. The chorus goes “Vrei sa pleci, dar nu-ma, nu-ma iei” meaning “You want to go, but you aren’t taking me, not me”. As the Romanian enclitics for “not me” are repeated a lot, it became known among those who have no idea what is going on in this catchy tine as the Numa song, and it was made notorious in YT not so much on its own account but because of a video of a guy called Gary Brolsma who danced in his seat n front of his webcam enthusiastically to this song. He was then roped in to be a promoter of this competition, although his actual link to this second song, which is written in broken Russian, is highly tenuous.

This video was my first attempt but had to be replaced as the panel rejected it as an entry because they didn’t like me borrowing the Seacrest cartoon in the middle and they also didn’t like the guy in his red underwear in this version (both these things were removed as you’ll see later in the final competition version I sent, and also I realised that the singer was referring to Grey Poupon mustard so that’s also changed in one point, not that it helped me). The panel guy or lady who wrote to me thought that the person (any physical resemblance to Gary Brolsma unintended, probably) in his undies was actually naked and had red plums. OK, thats just the fantasy of that person, but I had to change it. It was supposed to be a swipe at the bad grammar in the song, as he says “ya lublyu tebya, vy lubite menya” switching obliviously between the singular familiar and the polite plural forms of “you” in Russian, hence the real focal point is the switch from singular to plural pronouns with regard to the lady addressed.

  1. Funny. I just heard a numa-like track in a restaurant over lunch this past weekend. It didn’t strike me as a sample, so maybe it was an imitation of some sort or just a freak similarity. Sadly, I couldn’t identify it or catch it clearly enough on my phone’s voice recorder to track it down.
