Japanese friend in Warsaw

Original YT playout date: 24 February 2009
Duration: 24:49

Here is a day spent in the company of Takahiro Kajiura, an intelligent and cultured gentleman from the land of the flowering cherry.

I used for the background the song Ue o muite arukō, also known as Sukiyaki, by Kyu Sakamoto. This is a song I remembered from earliest childhood, which Takahiro-san helped me to identify.

上を向いて歩こう
Ue o muite arukō
I shall walk looking up

涙がこぼれないように
namida ga kobore nai yō ni
So that my tears won’t fall

思い出す春の日
Omoidasu haru no hi
Remembering Spring days

一人ぼっちの夜
Hitori bocchi no yoru
On this lonely night.

Poland (original composition)

Wednesday, September 2, 2020

Original YT playout date: 22 February 2009
Duration: 4:50

An original song written by me (words and music) in 2002, while not living in Poland. Since then I moved back, and so I don’t think of singing this song of missing Poland so much, as obviously I’m here. This is a call home to all the emigres with their qualifications doing work which is punching well below their strength in countries they think are richer. I’d remind you of the words of Denver, where he talks about a man who “said he’d be a poor man, if he never saw an eagle fly”.

Lyrics:

I am singing this song
For the place where I long
to be. That’s Poland

Life is wonderful there
In the sweet forest air
That’s free, in Poland.

In the valleys of Wisla and Bug,
Nature’s beauty wherever you look.
There is plenty and peace
In this new land of ease
For me, in Poland.

On Not Meeting Konwicki

Original YT playout date: 19 February 2009
Duration: 15:26

This living legend of literature was signing his book right next to my office, and as a literary person I wanted to go along and meet this figurehead letterhead. Unfortunately, all the other budding literati had the same notion, and the crowds of cultural vulturals descended on Wiejska Street in such force that I could not get anywhere near the great man.
