Huliganov’s Turkish Experience #11 – Fun with Fasil

Original playout date: 22 February 2008
Duration: 16:22

“Suyu gibi asiz ol!” This is another of my all time faves. With my good friends and colleagues from Istanbul. One of the evenings it would be so nice to go back and repeat.

Lost – the luggage series

Original playout date: 2 February 2008
Duration: 17:20

All my Turkish trip luggage appears to have been subverted to feed and clothe the Dharma project. Here I try and get some sense out of the system that the airlines have put in place to reunite people with their possessions. This was taken after 6 days, by today it’s been 9 days, still no news, and I still have to wait for compensation. Next week I will have to repurchase my entire luggage for the next Turkey long trip, and I still don’t qualify for compensation if the luggage is found before the end of the 30 days, as this person says. I’m not blaming him personally, but the system absolutely sticks. And SAS is much less respectful of its clients than KLM was in my case 15 months ago.

There are quite a few juicy one-liners and bits of sarcasm in this call.

Original playout date: 30 January 2008
Duration: 5:24

My wife had been asking for some time to be taken to see her old friend also called Lena from Belarus and I gave in in the end. In time for her to meet before the cancer which was eating her finally took her some months later, tragically.

Huliganov’s Turkish Experience #3 – Eat me!

Original playout date: 28 January 2008
Duration: 14:19

This evening we are in Taksim, in Beyoğlu, where the most thriving part of the city’s nightlife is, with shops open until late, and restaurants until even later. We went to one restaurant famous for the quality of its mezedes or hors d’oeuvres and were treated to some impromptu fasıl music. The title “Ye Beni” means “Eat me”, though whether it has the full range of meanings associated with that phrase in vernacular English I couldn’t begin to ask. Maybe someone here will tell me?

Huliganov’s 2nd North American Experience #7 – Lake Placid and the Fireside Steak House

This Fireside Steak House (2653 Main Street) in Lake Placid was one of the best meals, as well as best value, I’ve ever had. It was well worth the detour.

Holiday in Alsace #12/12 – The journey home

Original playout date: 8 December 2007
Duration: 13:17

Yes, we’ve reached the 12th and final part of the Alsace holiday saga, and I hope that you enjoy the road trip shots, the rare photo of my wife as a 19 year old, the impromptu Borat impersonation and the music of the UK Mr Big (NB not the same as the US group of the same name) and the full version of the song which has started each episode of this series, namely “Ne me quitte pas” by Brel, a song that launched many translations such as Shirley Bassey’s “if you go away” in the 1950s but none of them come in my opinion anywhere near the original, which must be in the top ten French language songs of all time.

Turek

Original playout date: 4 December 2007
Duration: 7:52

A little footage I took in Turek when I visited in the summer to help out my Maltese friend here, Robert, who was interested in a certain clothing factory. You see a little industrial photography here (I take a great deal of this but because of confidentiality it never ends up on youtube of course, but in this case it is absolutely non-sensitive.)

The highlight was the restaurant called Colosseum, worthy of a more populous catchment area than Turek.

I’m celebrating by giving you what (according to the comments received) you seem to want – the third part (the second in a row) of Huliganov’s Russia. Read the rest of this entry

Holiday in Alsace #7 – Going up Monkey Mountain

Original playout date: 19 September 2007
Duration: 6:57

Agent de YouTube Uncle Davey takes Sophie up Monkey Moutain in Alsace, which is a rhesus monkey enclosure and Sophie has a nice time feeding them.

It’s a bit scary really the way she comes right up to them. Thankfully they are not so aggressive and usually will warn prior to biting like most animals.
