Huliganov’s England – 1/4 “Ghost Town”

Original YT playout date: 17 January 2010
Duration: 13:14

We fly from Warsaw Chopinmall Airport to so-called “London” Luton, (don’t be fooled, it’s nowhere near London) and then go on to Hemel Hempstead to do a spot of Christmas shopping, and get a few special offers. One offering by the Specials in the 1970s talked about “this town is coming like a ghost town” – they could really have been singing about Hemel Hemsptead a quarter of a century later – all the old lovely things like the Pavilion and the old market, and the nativity crib all gone, and replaced with stupid tableaux of fluffy toys being attacked by wolves and nonsense like that! Quite frankly the way things are going, the town is lucky to have a Christmas tree. By the way, please note that even after all these years, I sang that song at exactly the right pitch – as the video proves. I didn’t autotune it. If you think that’s easy, you try it! Could always have been a fluke, of course…

Belgian Conga

Belgian Chamber, Christine Avgustaki, Belvedere Restaurant, Warsaw,

Original YT playout date: 17 January 2010
Duration: 10:03

“Well, they didn’t exactly conga, not by the time I left, anyway. It was the day after Hermann van Rompuy was named by the powers that be, (by which of course, I don’t mean the democratic electorate, as we did not get a vote on it, but as yet we’re still allowed to comment that, so I am) and the Belgian community abroad were so delighted by this that they invited all their friends to a slap up meal and a concert by one of their stars, in the most expensive restaurant in every capital city, to celebrate. We got Christine Avgustaki, for Warsaw, and the Belvedere restaurant. I hear that we had tried to get Jacques Brel for Poland, as he has many fans here, but that he was otherwise engaged.

Many thanks to Belgium for this, we all had a wonderful time, and I only left early as it was already past midnight, and anyway I never trained to dance, so I dance like a train.”

Huliganov TV has been able to get hold of a full version of this Soviet children’s movie for your enjoyment. The story is a traditional style fairytale, with King Jeremy kidnapped by the underwater kind Chudo-Yudo while making a census of his lands, and agreeing unwisely to a ransome demanded for his release…

Sunset with migrating starlings and the beginnings of a tornado

Original YT playout date: 16 January 2010
Duration: 5:49

This interesting sky was filmed on my drive home last year one November evening. The song is a composition of mine which doesn’t have words yet, but I am thinking about plum trees with white blossom on, seen across the plain of a river in spring flood. If anyone wants to turn that into a lyric, be my guest. After that we have a fairly random scene where Sophie starts to do one of her extemporaneous “stories” while we are waiting for our takeaway to be ready. I’m not sure that what you see in the sky is really the beginning of a tornado, but at first glance it sort of looked like one. Not sure how else something like that would be there just on its own like that …
