For anyone who has forgotten it, here is the beginning of the original Hippocratic oath from 4 centuries before Christ (hence they swore to false deities, but the intentions were just):

Ὄμνυμι Ἀπόλλωνα ἰητρὸν, καὶ Ἀσκληπιὸν, καὶ Ὑγείαν, καὶ Πανάκειαν, καὶ θεοὺς πάντας τε καὶ πάσας, ἵστορας ποιεύμενος, ἐπιτελέα ποιήσειν κατὰ δύναμιν καὶ κρίσιν ἐμὴν ὅρκον τόνδε καὶ ξυγγραφὴν τήνδε.
Ἡγήσασθαι μὲν τὸν διδάξαντά με τὴν τέχνην ταύτην ἴσα γενέτῃσιν ἐμοῖσι, καὶ βίου κοινώσασθαι, καὶ χρεῶν χρηίζοντι μετάδοσιν ποιήσασθαι, καὶ γένος τὸ ἐξ ωὐτέου ἀδελφοῖς ἴσον ἐπικρινέειν ἄῤῥεσι, καὶ διδάξειν τὴν τέχνην ταύτην, ἢν χρηίζωσι μανθάνειν, ἄνευ μισθοῦ καὶ ξυγγραφῆς, παραγγελίης τε καὶ ἀκροήσιος καὶ τῆς λοιπῆς ἁπάσης μαθήσιος μετάδοσιν ποιήσασθαι υἱοῖσί τε ἐμοῖσι, καὶ τοῖσι τοῦ ἐμὲ διδάξαντος, καὶ μαθηταῖσι συγγεγραμμένοισί τε καὶ ὡρκισμένοις νόμῳ ἰητρικῷ, ἄλλῳ δὲ οὐδενί.

Διαιτήμασί τε χρήσομαι ἐπ’ ὠφελείῃ καμνόντων κατὰ δύναμιν καὶ κρίσιν ἐμὴν, ἐπὶ δηλήσει δὲ καὶ ἀδικίῃ εἴρξειν.

Οὐ δώσω δὲ οὐδὲ φάρμακον οὐδενὶ αἰτηθεὶς θανάσιμον, οὐδὲ ὑφηγήσομαι ξυμβουλίην τοιήνδε. Ὁμοίως δὲ οὐδὲ γυναικὶ πεσσὸν φθόριον δώσω. Ἁγνῶς δὲ καὶ ὁσίως διατηρήσω βίον τὸν ἐμὸν καὶ τέχνην τὴν ἐμήν.””

Which, being translated, meaneth:

“”I swear by Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath.
To consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art.

I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.

But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.””

It seems that some people think that they ought to be allowed to pressure their doctors into becoming traitors to this ancient oath, which is not recited verbatim these days but of which the main intent, relevent to this debate, is inherent in all the modern equivalents.”

Davey voices off on the Tommy Boyd show

This was from 7th Oct 2008. There had been some interesting calls already from Eduardo, and also a telephone interview with the pro lap dancing lobbyist society’s propaganda chief, and then I came on as Paddy O’Donahue making quite a serious point despite the humoroustick manner, which was followed up by Eduardo calling to state that my Irish accent was no good. This stung me into action, resulting in one of the most pleasant and entertaining conversations I’ve had with Tommy Boyd, in which I do about six or seven different accents, offer a remarkably unfunny joke, and we get to hear a very amusing prank call involving two Indian restaurants. In other words, radio gold! Happy to say some of these radio friendships have lasted, and even today, in October 2020, as I transfer this across to HTV, I had an entirely unscheduled interraction on Facebook with Eduardo. Radio brings people together.

Uncle Davey calls Fiona Dutton’s Global Newstalk

The New Tommy Boyd Show 23rd September 2008

Only the second in his new series, but unfortunately the last to be cammed. It was Stuart Heron that we have to thank for the cams, and unfortunately with the demise of his firm the cam server also went. Best of luck to you Stu and hope you like your new work.
