Summer Morning on the Terrace

Production date: 27 June 2006
Playout date: 27/6/2006
Camera: Fuji Finepix
Post Production: None – but audioswap done in YT
Location: Home on terrace

This 26 second otherwise very ordinary piece is worth commenting on for two reasons, really. firstly, it has for no apparent reason risen to over 500 views per month on average for the simple reason that the centre frame features “Aunty” Irina in a black bikini. This tells us the easy way to achieve success on YT.

The second point worth commenting is that the same video has had now three audio tracks – the first was uploaded just with the camera sound that was going on that morning, and shortly after that YT started to offer a feature called “audioswap” where you could get royalty free music (in exchange for allowing an advert on the side of the piece concerned) and replace the original soundtrack with this. It was a good way round the time when you could get a good piece of video blocked and a black mark on your account for using proprietary music.

I replaced the audio that wasn’t copyrighted with one “royalty free” track offered by YT, and shortly after they told me it was blocked and so I had to do the audio swap again. You could in theory audioswap a piece of video as often as you liked.

Response to Father Christopher Howse’s article in the Telegraph on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela

I am pleased to see someone underlining the risk of spiritual pride that a pure works-religion thing like a pilgrimage can bring. If my understanding is not wrong, pilgrimages started in Spain after the moors got cleared out and the common people needed to be appeased as that was one thing they had appreciated under Islam – a bit like the way in East Europe newly westernised states keep the communist holidays but rename them, as the communists did previously in some cases to the religious ones. The charm of pilgrimage in the mediaeval times was that it was the one time the feudal system was cast aside, and both serf and master would tread a road together. Relieved from their onerous chores and welcomed with refreshments along the way, the medieval pilgrimage was the nearest thing they had to the company outing, and the fashion spread out across the Catholic world from Spain. That spreadsheet, again…

In the second film by Huliganov on the Goldlist method a spreadsheet is used just to illustrate what the handwritten notebook should look like. It’s not to be used to encourage people to do their goldlists in Excel, as a handwritten goldlist will be much better.

The link given in that film died, thanks to my old provider, who removed his internet hosting service very clumsily onto Godaddy, and who then ignored my requests to enable me to access my control panel after he changed its location, and then came at me with unbelievable umbrage when I reacted to that by stopping his payments for the hosting.

I’ve now managed to dig up the original file, and many people have asked for it, so here it is.

It wasn’t possible to offer an .xls file for direct download on wordpress, but it’s on the Huliganov and Friends google group. It may ask you to join, in which case if there are any problems let me or kenbank from YT know as he is kind enough to co-moderate over there with me.
