Just a little point for travellers

Original playout date: 30 March 2008
Duration: 4:04

A mobile Hulirant encouraging people to repect the CITES convention and not buy rare species or things made from them while travelling. You can see the items confiscated in Warsaw airport, in a special “gablotta” as the term of art is, dedicated to making travellers wise up and stop taking elephants’ feet.

Huliganov’s Barcelona Experience #2 – “Arrival in Barcelona”

Original playout date: 30 March 2008
Duration: 16:26

Flying over the Mediterranean to Barcelona airport. Unsually, the arrival video in this Barcelona series is the second not the first as I made an initial one, largely about smoking being for morons, in the first part of the travel there. It is interesting how travel to Barcelona from Warsaw took practically all day as there was no direct flight at that time.

Uncle Davey’s Herts Content, #11 “Around Water End”

Original playout date: 29 March 2008
Duration: 9:22

Some nice colour on this video again. We look at trout farms, watercress, beautifully composed village scenery and sheep in pasture. What’s not to love?

Don’t miss the images of Hertfordshire pudding stone (which is a real mineral by the way, not just a pleasantry) and the the English pub food in Gaddesden.

Huliganov’s Turkish Experience #16 – Eating in Kutahya

Original playout date: 29 March 2008
Duration: 5:33

Scenes from two fine meals, incorporating perfect Turkish hospitality, fine food, fine ceramic and football with Fenerbahce.

Black carrot juice with spices – a fine drink they should sell over here too. It sounds like I am saying “blackcurrant juice” but it is actually black carrots. Checking this out, I note that what this is is not a separate species, just the purple form which is actually the way they looked as they came into Europe in the tenth Century AD, along the silk road, while the orange version we know and love was only emerging in Afghanistan at around that time, and arrived some time later.

Carrots are one vegetable with quite interesting comparative etymologies, having clumps of similar words for them in similar languages, but these don’t really resemble one another. I hope to enlarge on that one day in a series of etymological articles.

Tczew (1 of 2)

Original playout date: 29 March 2008
Duration: 14:59

I like Tczew, it’s the old German city of Dirschau, mention in Gunter Grass’s Tin Drum. I have spent quite a few nice times there.

I wasn’t sure if people would like my portrayal style as in Grudziadz another Northern Polish town with a German background, I got a lot of flack, but actualy the likes are 30 on this with only 2 dislikes.

The GPS machine seems to be taking me on a right wild goose chase, into someone’s yard instead of the centre of the town. Those were not exactly the days of google maps and the precision we now have, and that’s bad enough at times.
