The World According to Irina

Original YT playout date: 7 February 2010
Duration: 1:26:04

This was the footage on my sister-in-law’s mobile phone after she needed to clear it off after having it with her all the time and taking photos and films with it from time to time. It includes our family here in Warsaw, my wife’s and her family in a small farm in deepest Belarussia, and some footage from her final class at school in Warsaw and the fun she had with her classmates then and also on New Year’s with fireworks. In the main it’s Christmas 2008- Summer 2009 footage. I did a tiny bit of post-production and added some music on, but in the main it’s not my film, it’s the world according to Irina.

Fledglings Sledging

Original YT playout date: 6 February 2010
Duration: 22:52

For those of you who come from the other side of the Atlantic, you may not understand what I say when I say sledging. It is the way we say “”sledding””. I don’t know how the “”-edge”” part dropped out of the American way, but to the best of my knowledge we have the edge on you there.

There are many words which do end in -ed which would sound funny if you replaced the -ed with -edge, though. Imagine going to somebody’d wedging, for instance. “With this ring, I thee wedge” – well they can be a tight fit. And it could be true in a sense in some cases, where no wedging had happened prior to the ceremony.

Anyhow, this is how New Years Day 2010 looked for our family…

Metodologia Gold List – Pochodzenie i Dlaczego To Dziala

Original YT playout date: 5 February 2010
Duration: 39:06

Original YT playout date: 3 February 2010
Duration: 2:23

上を向いて歩こう has never been so extraordinarily renditionated. Kyu Sakamoto was a brilliant and soulful performer of this piece, but that won’t stop anyone else getting their hands on it and making vastly inferior versions, like this one here by Lucjan O’ Poworocki. If you think this is sacriledge, you should just look at what Taste of Honey did to it!

Assistance requested by Huliganov to help to spy out the Russian…

Thursday, August 5, 2021

Original YT playout date: 1 February 2010
Duration: 9:57

…text to the much-quoted (but only ever in English) poem “Lying To The Young Is Wrong” which *purports* to be translation of a poem by atheist partyline-hugger survive-all-political-weathers veteran bard Yevgeniy Yevtushenko, the man of whom it was said that his ego could shatter glass at twenty paces. But even this doyen of self-promotion does not display the Russian version of this famous verse on his website, nor anywhere for that matter. Was it just my overlooking the obvious, or has he censored it out? Or has he simply lost it? Help Huliganov find the putative original of this highly dubious piece of poetry, and maybe if you like do a video response reading it, and Huli will be most grateful, and will give you a mention on the next big Russian lesson video. Update: Thanks to Gunsandbullhorns and also Chesneywormbot, I managed to get this far:

Christmas 2009 – the grand unwrappening of giftes

Original YT playout date: 31 January 2010
Duration: 44:30

It’s that time of year, so we get around the tree and get opening the presents. But of course we remember the greatest gift of all. That usurper Santa Claus has no place in our household, we know that we are giving each other presents to celebrate that God Himself came into the world in human flesh to save us.

Koschei the Deathless – Кащей Бессмертный

Original YT playout date: 31 January 2010
Duration: 1:03:45

An early Soviet movie from 1944 directed by Alexander Rou and starring Georgiy Millyar as the undead skeletal rapist ogre of ancient Slavonic mythology. Here it serves an analogy of the aggressor against Russia in the Second World War, still raging at the time this film was made. It is a call to the Russian people to rise up against the monster and drive it from their homeland.

From Raciborz to Katowice by train

Original YT playout date: 30 January 2010
Duration: 6:12

This shows Silesia from the window of a local train. The train in question was quite clean and comfortable for one of its genre. I had better add that in case people get the idea that they can explore all Poland’s backwaters in minor trains and still always get a reasonable pleasant ride. Your railage may vary.

Love and Grumpiness, or, the Pre-Christmas Spirit – with fine poem wot I wrote.

Original YT playout date: 30 January 2010
Duration: 25:22

“Twas the week before Christmas, and all round the town
Uncle Davey found things that were making him frown
The carp were all stuffed in a tank full of piss
Thinking “even the frying pan’s better than this”
With soap suds and fungus – a piteous sight!
(But I show the way to keep catfish aright)
With incomplete sets and confusing intentions
The products for children’s gifts needed a mention
Just one dwarf per set, while the picture showed seven
May these toy makers get their reward in heaven!
No Happy, No Sneezy, Ach, Donner und Blitzen
Das ganze Ding war nur ein Krock von Schitzen
Thought up by some in-Doc-trinated numpty
To catch out the Dopey, but make the rest Grumpy!
Just boxes of cons were the toys on store shelves
While the queues for a tire change were tiring themselves
With temperatures minus fourteen, and the rest
You wouldn’t want to be out improperly dressed.
Fine folk of goodwill bearing Dortmund plates
Parked up for a while in the invalid space
No badge they did show, and the mother jumped out
Like a sprite, disability strongly in doubt
So they got named and shamed and blamed and inflamed
But let us just pray that they do not get lamed.
For the real needy not one ounce of consideration
But no balls to get out and make confrontation!
But I heard her exclaim as I strolled out of sight
“You can’t film me, man, for I know my rights.”
