I remember seeing some of Alan Heath’s YT work at the time you released the interviews you did with him. Seems a very knowledgable and passionate recorder of the events of the Shoah. Sadly a current web search seem to only find a YT channel cantaining no videos. This could, of course, the channel of a different Alan Heath. The alanheath.com website wont open at all for me, with or without VPN connection. I do hope he is still active in keeping younger people aware of what happened in 1939-1945 Germany.
Alan B.
Well Alan, it’s a good question. Alan Heath basically ghosted me when our political differences because too large, or basically when COVID and the close of Trump’s first presidency casued so many poinyts of difference when he decided to basically ignore me from that point. I gave it several attempts to return to the friendship, as I do not believe in rupturing with people over difference in politics or faith. I haven’t defriended him or blocked him on any networks and I donb’t think he has me either, he just didn’t wish to respond, and after a while I stopped inflicting on myself the pain of trying to get a former friend to be a friend again. Alan has done that to many people, so I wasn’t entirely surprised by the pattern. He makes new firendships easily with his affable talk so I dare say old friendships are cheap to him.
So in short I can’t really say what he is doing, I notice he makes camper van videos still but I don’t very often click on them because the whole thing just saddens me.
Thanks David. On your point about friendship, “as I do not believe in rupturing with people over difference in politics or faith”. That’s a very sensible approach and I agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly. A strong stable friendship ought to transcend differences like that. I have a long-standing video conferencing friendship with a Catalonian gentleman of my age and I know for a fact we do not entirely agree on a few things but we can agree to differ on those issues without any rancour or irritation. For instance, as you probably know, I lean towards agnosticim. He on the other hand is most definitely a committed atheist. I can see from our conversations how his background and education would have led him to that position, but I think it is often unwise to have rigid and fixed opinions and try to keep an open mind on most topics. I try not to have a mind so open that my brain falls out though ! Actually, of late Becket’s “Waiting for Godot” seems to make a lot more sense to me than it once did. All of the noise currently out there on the various media makes plain to me the thoughts Becket had when he wrote Lucky’s monologue ! It takes a great dramatist to write a play that dispenses with the unities, goes nowhere, layers in philosophy and manages to be simultaneously amusing and sad. Of course it doesn’t mean that Becket was a signed up member of the theatre of the absurd or existensialism. I think I’m right in saying he actually disagreed with many of Sartre’s views. His reading of books by various existentialist philosophers just gave him a few ideas and the impetus for a play, I think.
On a complete tangent, if any readers haven’t yet come across this, there are a whole series of free and intelligent Spanish lessons on YouTube by a gentleman named Rodrigo Ferrias (who lives, or did when I last checked, in Buenos Aires. Refreshing to get away from the “learn to speak…..in 2 weeks” audience capture videos. Here is the link : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKQEL9j11yiVY7mQfHfzOjTGpamVzoVrc
He also teaches German,English and Mandarin to Spanish speaking viewers.
David. Thanks again to you for all of the effort you have put into creating HTV. It’s a rare website that provides entertainment, education and thoughtful content in one place.
With very best wishes to you. Alan.
Many thanks, Alan. Thanks for that playlist too. Stay well.
